I am getting dozens of birds... I am putting out live mealworms for the birds and their young but my problem is I have spent £74.50 since May 1st! I am getting dozens of birds visiting to fill their beaks up with the worms to take back to their nest but apart from not being able to keep spending this much, should I be letting the birds start getting their own food too as at this rate the young will be too fat to fly when they decide to enter the big wide world! We see this splendid fellow quite often - always a pleasure to see him. I think he's a youngster as he will sometimes pick up a twig and throw it in the air and play with it, very reminiscent of a puppy.

I have an emergency.

For some weeks I have been watching a pair of great tits conscientously feeding their youngsters in the nest they built in an amphora on my balcony.

Just now, a few minutes ago, I found that almost the whole brood is dead. I can see one alive in there.

This is particularly sad because this tragedy has happened only a few days before they fledge.

Without, at this stage, going into the details of what happened (although I would appreciate suggestions later), can anyone tell me if there is any way to save the remaining youngster?

Slowly but surely the birds are making a comeback Blue Tits are nesting in the box again, the Starlings are emptying the cocnut shell before lunch time, the Sparrows are spending a lot of time in the corner bush, the Goldfinches are making a comeback not in the numbers that used to be but a definate improvment on recent times. I spotted a Coal Tit hanging on to the feeder in the tree the other morning. And the Blackbirds appear to be nest building in the hedges pics attached, I spotted the female with what I thought was a piece of rag in its mouth ( I have since determined that it was a piece of tissue ) watched it fly to the hedge look round a bit and then make her way inside the hedge, shortly after she returned with a mouthful of nesting material so here's hoping. :D:) d.b

]]> Members Photos d.berry6 http://www.cjwildlifeforum.com/showthread.php?t=2332 New visitors!! http://www.cjwildlifeforum.com/showthread.php?t=2330&goto=newpost Tue, 08 May 2012 08:53:37 GMT I expect everyone's quite used to this but, having a garden in North London, my feathered visitors have been fairly limited - sparrows, coal and blue-tits, blackbirds (who've raised several families over the years), the occasional pair of collared doves, loads of pigeons, a pair of very helpful robins (who tell me which bit of the garden to dig over for them next, having thanked me for the bit I've just dug), a wren from time to time, a woodpecker and of course, the dreaded sparrowhawk occasionally.
However, at the weekend, I saw a pair each of goldfinch and chaffinch. So exciting!! I can't tell you the number of times I went into the kitchen to make coffee, picked up the binoculars (permanently on the window sill) and stood and watched them at the feeders for ages. (I put the kettle on again after they've all gone...)
I've noticed that the finches tend to perch at the feeders while feeding, whereas the sparrows and tits operate a grab and run system. The finches have started the fat cylinder in the guardian too - and the other little birds have followed suit.
It's definitely nesting time - I filled the very large seed feeder on Sunday morning and needed to do so again this morning. (Must order more...)

Yesterday we saw about 30 species without leaving the car park, highlights were the baby Siskins and baby Grey Wagtails. I could only manage a distant shot of the Grey Wag so haven't attached it but have put on a female Green Woodpecker, a juvenile Siskin (on a CJ Feeder!) and a ringed Starling with nesting material :) Hope you like!
