How many nest boxes will you be putting up this year? Last year I put up my first boxes (7 in total) and had successful broods in 4 boxes. All Blue Tits.

I put up 3 boxes and they were not used  so I will be moving them this year.

Where will you put them? I suggest plenty of cover and fairly high up (that's where mine got used)

Were they occupied right away or do you have to be patient?

We put them up in Jan and think we had a few broods in two of them and 1 brood in the other 2. I can remember watching the parents go in and out of the boxes on a lovely warm day, so definitely May onwards. I tend to avoid the garden when its cold - so not sure on the date of the first chicks

I've definitely seen Blue Tits in my garden too. I think I'll try a Birch log nest box or two. Thanks for your help.

I know its early, but don't forget to clean them out after October. I was expecting to see nice fluffy nests and that it would be quite a pleasurable experience. There were fluffy nests, but also lots of other bits and bobs in there - not so nice!!!! Wearing gloves is essential.

October seems quite late - surely all the nesting activity is long over by then?
I'm probably just being a wimp - I generally try and avoid the garden once the dark nights and cold weather are back with us!!!!!

We have a Sparrow Terrace which has been occupied for two years running. I haven't cleaned it out yet. Am I too late for this year as there have been a few signs of activity?

CLS - October really is the recommended month (or later) as there are birds that have multiple broods and wouldn't be finished until September.
Sunspray - I would leave the House Sparrow Terrace for this year if you've seen activy already - don't want to scare them away. I think it's just best practise to clean out.

I put up 2 nest boxes last year, but neither were used. I intend to move 1 and put up another I received yesterday. Have I left it too late?

I wouldn't move a nestbox as it might already be occupied by now. You should be just in time if you get the new one up quick.

The box I intend to move actually came down in the last winds. I'll try and get this one and the new one up this week.
