I asked the same thing a couple of years ago - I wanted to replace some of the "peg" perches with perching rings which I suspect is what you are thinking of doing. The answer I got was that they held a very limited stock for replacing items damaged in transit and would be reluctant to run that stock down. They did in the end sell me 4 perching rings but it was made clear that this was a one-off situation. I don't know if things have changed since then.

Suspect it would cost CJ's more than they could charge, given the present fuel situation. Their costs are pretty reasonable for carriage - I keep wondering when they're going to have to give in delivering up here with unleaded approaching £1.30 per litre and diesel well over. As someone well under £15K gross a year, I have to be careful and I value CJs policy on postage, so I have to save up for a specialist order to ensure I maximise what I order and reduce their costs so it helps them keep prices for delivery down. We're lucky to have CJs - TNT charge £10 for a first class letter to some places north of Inverness (and it can take 10 days to arrive! - RM do much better) so their continued use of RM is heaven sent - I may not order so much, but try to do bulk order to help them and me.

I appreciate what Alangs says about replacement perching rings. Last year a squirrel managed to knock one of our seed feeders from the tree onto the ground, & I never did find one of the perching rings - I had to shell out on a new feeder!

I just wanted to let you know our policy regarding spare parts. We will happily consider sending out spares if these are required if they have been lost or damaged. To discuss your spare part requirements with us you can call our friendly staff on 0800 731 2820.

However, the sending of spares does depend on the individual circumstances. For single spare parts where there has been a breakage or loss of a component during transit or cleaning, there should be no problem getting a spare part to you in the post subject to the availabilty of spare components at the time.

In the past we have had people request dozens of components, at times enough to make up enough feeders to fill a shop shelf (!!!) so for obvious reasons we have to address each request individually.

Hi, I have had helpfrom CJs, in the past, with providing replacement perches for Defender nut feeders - these perches are not very securely retained. They can become dislodged and may go missing if the feeder falls to the ground. CJs have replaced them for me -for free - in the past but I am reluctant to ask again. I have two nut feeders which are missing perches and I cannot find an effective substitute, I refuse to throw the feeders away as the rest of the feeder parts are still in excellent condition. I would like to BUY a quantity (say about 10) perches to cover the missing ones and future losses. I would also be happy to BUY other spares for my Defender nut & nyjer feeders

Let's face it, these feeders are not cheap to replace. Surely, providing support in repair and refurbishment of feeders would be a positive move forward. I am prepared to pay for any spare parts that I need - can't you investigate whether this could be a viable option?

You can buy perch rings easily on line, they push on and pull off. They seem to fit any feeders, even the cheep feeders my friend got from the market, Kingfisher product I think it was, the ring perch's fitted onto these straight perches easily. Just goggle for them as there are quite a few companies that sell them. Jacobi Jayne sell them for £5.95 for a pack of six, plus postage costs on top, bit pricey for postage if all you are ordering is the little light ring perches but cheaper than a new feeder, if I was CJ's I'd start selling them, I know CJ's don't sell the ring perches on there own, only the whole feeder with ringed perch.

Thanks Chrissie, that is helpful. However - I still need replacement ROD perches for my peanut feeders. Unless I can find out where to buy them, I will have to find the right diameter steel rod & try to make my own. Also, as all the Defender & Challenger etc., feeders break down into component parts for cleaning - why has no supplier registered that there may be a healthy market for replacement component parts? If I had youth & capital on my side I would probably look into doing that myself!

It slightly puzzles me, John, why you should be looking for perches for your nut feeders (as well as for your seed feeders which would obviously need them), as nut feeders are generally used by clinging species like the tit family. If you look in the CJ catalogue you'll find that the peanut feeders are not supplied with perches at all, and the acrobatic feathered customers cling on to the wire mesh quite easily.

I do have a guard on my peanut feeder, purely to save it from the depredations of the local squirrels, which have made too many holes in the feeder mesh in the past!

Puzzle over, Jandy! The perch is / was supplied as an integral component part of the Defender nut feeder. Apart from the perching function it serves to keep the mesh tube attached to the metal base of the feeder. The steel rod perch passes through the mesh and then through a machined hole in the feeder base. The rod cannot be too thick as it must pass through the holes. It cannot be too thin or it will fall out, the feeder bottom will fall off and my nuts will be all over the floor! Simples!! I need spare perches to keep my three Defender nut feeders together - trust me!

I'm still a little mystified, John. I looked at the pictures of the metal Defender peanut feeders in the catalogue (P.36), and still can't make out any perches! In the left hand pic there are two things sticking out of the bottom of the feeder, but in no way do they look like perches. Is it the rod at the top which the handle goes through? It's no good me comparing my peanut feeder, as it's not a CJ's, and came with a built-in guardian.
