I had some boil in the bag Basmati Rice that was well past the best before date.
The Sparrows consumed it in no time.:)
Starlings were not too keen.
I made a 'cake' of melted Lard, bread crumbs, kibbled peanuts and dried mealworms.
Putting it in my new CJ Peanut defender, it stopped the Starlings plundering the food. The trouble is that the Blue Tits seem to deserted my garden.
And I haven't seen a Thrush for ages
Oh well, I can't winnem all.

They love rice twitcher i put lots of spare cooked rice out which is left over from curries etc, i started putting it in the chicken pen but the sparrows just swooped and enjoyed, crows and maggies dive in too, i spring cleaned out the cupboards the other day and found loads of out of date stuff, (spring clean was late this year lol ) so i boiled it all up for the chickens rice noodles, with potato pealings and well just anything really, threw it to the chickens and the crows maggies and sparrows got a free meal. it smelled aweful but lasted not long.

Out of interest, what colour is your Defender. I'm just wondering if it could have anything at all to do with it.
I've caught one fleeting glimpse of a blue tit in the last month, and that was not feeding, just passing though in a nearby treetop a few days ago, and my thrushes have gone too.
I'm just wondering why they scarpered since I put up a peanut feeder that they can use (the tits that is!) They normally come over completely unnecessary when peanuts are there to be had. I got the peanut feeder especially for them too, but since they are not about, it became almost pointless.
I got a stack of peanuts for them to use up too, but I can put them crushed into seed feeders, most birds seem to want them, so that's not so bad I guess.

The colour of my peanut defender cage is Green as purchased.
My offer of a 'cake', made up from lard, dried mealworms and kibbled peanuts didn't attract any birds. So after a few days I put it out for all and sundry.
The Starlings made short work of it.
Seeing a fleeting glimpse of a Bluetit I put out another one, but it hasn't been touched.
I think all the local Sparrows have got the message that I've been putting out boiled Rice as they seem to like it. At one time I counted 15 of them feeding.
Yesterday I cut the grass. It pleased me to see a male Blackbird not being bothered by my motor mower and hopping around quite close to me.
All good fun! Byeeee

The majority of my garden birds have hopped it too, the resident robin is about daily and the odd sparrow and a crow now and then but i wonder if the tits have gone into more wooded cover after the chicks leave the nest for more protection as our local magpies have about 4 young and they are on the rampage here checking everywhere for food. but when you look at my bird list lots of others have gone too,
its possible that the birds move about alot and now visit neighbours gardens ? the young will obviously try to find new territory soon , i am surrounded by woods and can hear lots diff song but dont see as much as the last months, and the weather has been bad with high winds so maybe they seek shelter in the woods. but come breeding season they all come back every year.
