During the past few weeks, CJs 1 litre peanut cake blocks have been attracting a lot of assorted tits and finches, nuthatches and blackbirds. More recently, however, magpies and the residents of the local rookery have also been taking an interest. The result is that a new block put out on Monday evening was mostly gone by lunchtime on Friday and by mid-afternoon had disappeared completely - presumably stolen by one of the big black beauties. I'm not that keen on feeding the really big birds, I'm not sure that I can afford to satisfy their appetites. A CJ Peanut Cake Guardian would keep them away but, from the look of the photo, would also debar the black-birds who have been using he cake to supplement the diet of their nestlings. Does anyone have any alternative strategies for discouraging the less desirable big birds without also cutting out the more desirable medium sized ones?

Two peanut cakes? One guarded for the smaller birds. One unguarded for the bigger ones.

A thought thanks - albeit a costly one. Though I'm not sure that I want to encourage the magpies and rooks at all. I'd like to be able to accept black-bird size downwards. I know this could also risk the arrival of starlings but I don't see them round here.
