This is a silly question really, but...............do any of you feed earthworms to the birds?
If so, then what do you put them out in?
My problem is we bought some earthworms for the blackbirds who are nesting in the garden, thinking we'd supplement their diet, so I put some out in a bowl on the garden table and I naively thought I could put them out in the mealworm feeder and they would stay in it. I thought the robins might like them too.
When I checked to see if they had been eaten yesterday morning they had certainly all gone from the feeder, so I put some more out. I went back to bed to drink my tea and was watching the feeders from the bedroom window. I could see worms climbing over the edge of the feeder and falling down onto the ground. The ones I had put out the day before hadn't been eaten after all.................they had all escaped:o
I went out to look at the bowl and it too was empty, but when I picked the bowl up all the worms were underneath it, sheltering in the dark:)
This takes me back to my original question.........what can you put them out in so that they can't escape:confused:
We decided that we should perhaps just put them on the ground and hope the blackbirds get them before they burrow into the soil, but then you can't guarantee the birds will get them before they run off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or slither off!!
