View Full Version : Relocating (moving) Bird Feeding Dilema

I will soon be relocating (moving) to another place about 30 miles away.:)
As a fairly serious year round bird feeder I have developed quite a following of birds at my current feeders
Now, at this important bird feeding time of year, at the start (where I live) of the breeding season, my feeders will suddenly disappear and my flock ( so to speak) may suffer.:(
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should wean my birds away from the feeders before I leave?
Feeling bad

First of all, can you contact the new dwellers, and ask that they keep the feeders full of food, if only for a few months? You'd have to donate your current feeders of course, but it would be a worthy cause, particularly if the new owners take up bird watching!
Alternatively, perhaps take a few feeders down, and feed less. This will encourage the birds to travel further seeking food. Perhaps as an alternative to the above, you could encourage your neighours to start feeding the birds, then they'd only have to go next door :)

P.D.,
You may find the owners amenable to taking over a feeder. I recently moved into a bungalow (Dec.). The previous owner was like you an avid bird feeder and she asked if I would follow her lead if she left a feeder and seed for me.
I have since been bought, for Christmas and my Birthday, a bird table and another feeder.
Leave one feeder and some food and ask them if they will carry on. If you have a loyal following of birdies, it will be fun for the new owners to enjoy the antics of your garden visitors.

Sahbster: Thanks for the suggestions, but unfortunately they are not appropriate in my situation.
The house we are leaving was a rental, and is now up for sale. At this time there is no-one moving into the house any time soon, so there will be a lengthy gap between occupants.
So I'm still in the "wean off" mode. Happily Spring has sprung now and the heavy snows of a week ago are long gone.
Thanks for you interest
Peter
