I get a number of blackbirds in my garden, eight being the maximum at any one time. They sometimes squabble or chase each other but what I have just seen is a first. Two females locked in combat, the dominant bird had the other pinned to the ground and was hammering the daylights out of it. She only let up when I went out and chased them. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

That's amazing, Mobee. We have 2 pairs of blackbirds + at least 1 immature that the others tolerate. All seem to get along ok, but there is a pecking order I think. If one lower in the order is by the table it flies off quickly when a more dominent b'bird arrives. Today I saw a female house sparrow really chasing another, even though generally they all seem to get on ok. She would not let up, though the one being chased didn't give up and managed to get to a feeder every time. Could have been a stranger blown in by the very strong wind. There's about 8 regulars in our garden, as far as I can tell with all their flitting about.

The pair off Bluetits who look as if they are going to nest in the garden are a right pair of bullies, they chase the goldfinches from the feeder near "their"nest box, although it has not come to blows as yet
