Hi, I have some peanuts in my garage that I've had for some time now, maybe a year. They're stored in a plastic bucket with a lid. They look ok, no mould etc and do not feel soft at all. Do you think they are still fit for consumption? How long should one keep peanuts before throwing them out and buying fresh?

I guess as long as they haven't been exposed to too much moisture, they should be reasonably usable. The cold conditions in the garage will have helped.

Chop one (or several) up and make sure they're ok inside - nice and crisp and with no mould.

If they have been kept in fairly cool conditions they should be fine.

The best test is to put some out for the birds, if there is anything not quite right then the taste would be affected so you will probably notice that they are not being eaten.

Hope this helps.

Well, they certainly look and feel ok. I've put some out in feeders and also crushed some and put them on the bird tables. They are definitely being eaten. In fact, I've seen a pair of Long Tailed Tits and a Greater Spotted Woodpecker on a feeder that I positioned in some bushes recently. :)
