My wife works in school kitchen &every so often she brings home uncooked pastry is this alright to put out for the birds :)

Uncooked Pastry is fine for birds, try pushing some into tree bark you may attract treecreeper or nuthatch.
ps Cheese is also good for this:)

I agree that uncooked pastry is great during winter but be careful in spring and summer because nestlings can choke if large peices are given to them by inexperienced parents.

I haven't tried this but I find that my odd apple left in the fruit bowl is adored by the blackbirds

hmm, any specific variety... cheddar... edam ? and do the baby birds prefer dairy lea ?
