A few babies and a teenage starling with its head covered in berry juice

Hi Sue. Just wondered if the greenfinch in the second photo was o.k. It didn't look to me like a young bird but maybe one which had Trichomonosis, a disease affecting finches and other birds. They often sit near food, fluffed up, but are unable to swallow. I ask because I have just had a sparrow die of it and when I checked it has become quite prevalent again this year. Hope I'm very wrong and it was o.k.

Hi Hevva,

It was eating ok and I thought it was a baby because of the colouring. It was a cold and damp day so was fluffed up even more. It was around for several days so hopefully it survived. I hate it if birds die. Yesterday out of the blue a sparrowhawk caught one of my starlings.

Sue

Really like your photos. A lovely collection. :) Were you close or do you have a good zoom lens?

Hi Catscratch,
Thankyou. I usually use a 70-300 zoom or a 500 zoom on my Nikon and take pictures through an open kitchen window handheld. I wish I could get closer and keep joking that I will get a hide made for the garden. The finches are easily scared just by the sound of the camera even though they wait and watch me fill their feeders everyday.
Kind Regards
Sue

Hi Nature,
Thanks for your comments
It is a baby greenfinch as far as I know but it does look more like a baby chicken being so yellow. I could not decide what it was after downloading the picture, but the only small birds I have at the moment are Greenfinches,Goldfinches,Blue Tits and Sparrows.

thanks sue. if you look at it's face it looks like a greenfinch.
Some greenfinches are quite yellow, i think, a sort of lemon-olive colour.
I used to have lots in my garden a few weeks back, but now I don't seem to see them.
I think the new male robin visitors are so territorial, they're a little scared to come back!

-- By the way. . .
I just looked at some baby greenfinch photos on the internet,
and most look just like the 2nd photo. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with him!
(hopefully not, anyway)

What great photos, Nature Lover - they really have the Ahhh! factor. We have had lots of baby goldfinches this year, and also starlings - they look quite strange when they're halfway between their juvenile and adult plumage.
