We dont have the colorful songbirds that you are blessed with in the UK. Of course, in the northern USA there are all kinds of colorful birds. A typical day in our suburban yard in North Texas includes the following:
mourning dove, whitewing dove, ring neck dove, house sparrow, song sparrow, blue jay, cardinal, robin, boat tail grackle, common grackle, starling, hummingbird, and just recently we have four barn swallows hanging around - one of them accidently flew in the house but we got him out again. A hungry Coopers Hawk lives in the area and is very adept at grabbing birds. If we had more rats and mice he would probably be content with those. I feed four blue jays a small pile of peanuts each morning. They wait for me. The jays are so fast the squirrels rarely score a peanut.
