This was taken last year, but I'm hoping someone will know what is going on. It looks like a small slow worm being strangled by a larger slow worm. Can anyone enlighten me?

Snakes intertwine as a mating ritual. So thats what could be going on.

Thanks Pine Marten. I thought it might be mating but it looked a bit brutal.

From the information I've gleaned it seems lots of natures mating is in fact "Bruta"l.
I won't go on as some of the info is quite distressing but it seems its not an enjoyable past time for lots of different species, especially the birds.
great picture by the way catscratch, we have slow worms in our garden too, they are not as common as they were when I was a kid, back in the 70's.
The first time my kids had seen one was the ones in our garden. yet when we were kids they were a common sight when we were playing in the fields and long grass.
Whoops! sorry, we don't have long grass for kids to play in nowadays do we, they might injure themselves on one of those nasty long blades of grass,
You have to go to a nature reserve to find long grass today.
