You lose some, you gain some :) This winter I haven't seen a single Brambling in the garden and Siskin are very scarce, but I have been blessed with small flock of Lesser Redpoll, which makes a very nice change as these are usually very rare visitors over the years.

Brilliant pics, Shamal. I have never seen Redpolls - they give the impression that they've just brushed under some fresh red paint!

I wish I could have a flock of them instead of very badly behaved swans and ducks... lovely photos...

by the way may i ask...
do you have any tips on bird photography?
I try but always find the birds tend to not come near the garden when I'm out.
even if I hide!...
I have a 10 mp digital camera.
how do you get so close?
if I zoom in it goes blurry :(

Wow great pics - would love to see some of those in my garden :)
Nature lover:- I've found that with regular exposure to your presence the birds kinda get used to you - just takes a lot of patience, good luck.
