This morning I had my first small bird on my new feeder station, it was a Great tit, and anyone would thinks it was the queen come to visit me I was so happy.

So far the only birds who've been eating are my garden Blackbirds who live in the conifers, Starlings who can smell meal worm a mile off, and Woodpigeons  Oh and one Thrush, don't know what type as my bird book is so old I couldn't identify it. I've got Sparrows in my garden, but so far they've just ignored the feeders :)

Hi!
Woodies and starlings are welcome and i get flocks of 20 in my garden... And i don't mind.
Great tits are wonderful, yes, congratulations!

if you want help with the thrush identifying ... here are the two main choices:

This one is a MISTLE thrush.... did it look like this??

Or did it look like this one... which is more common...( song thrush)

and also what type of sparrow was it? if you don't know you can just ask :)
I'd love to know because, if they're house sparrows, they are in decline now
so it is superb to encourage them into the garden.

good luck ashton.

Thanks, it was a Song Thrush, and the Sparrows are in fact, Dunnocks. I've treated myself to a new bird book and I've now recognised and am getting to know a few more birds since writing that thread, and I've now seen Long Tailed Tits as well as the Blue and Great Tits. Also some Chaffinch are now feeding, as are Robins and Wrens.

During the winter I was feeding both the Wood pigeons and Collared doves, but my favourite was when one morning I happened to look at the roof of the bird table at the bottom of the garden, and a Jay flew in and sat there for a couple of minutes. I was delighted as I've never seen one in my life before.

One thing I do get a lot of is those grey things with pointed ears and a bushy tail, but since I bought the baffler feeders, not so many as I used to :)

Wow!
I have never seen a jay either, and only had wrens in the garden very recently.

Those were great pictures of the two types of thrush you had there, Nature Lover - looking at the song thrush, there was something about his face and beak that made me think he was quite young, maybe not too long fledged. Do you agree?
