I feed the bird in my garden, and always have fresh water in a dish. But with the cold weather coming, and having a north facing garden, Im concerned about the water in the dish freezing. Much as I like the birds in the garden, I dont want to risk like and limb putting fresh water out when theres 2' of snow on the ground :D but Ive heard about some bird baths that have an element in the base that only heat up during cold spells to keep the water liquid. Does anyone know where I can buy one?

Hi Solomon

We are West facing (perhaps slightly to the north of West). I only have a large drip tray from a garden centre that I use for water. It does get a nice thick layer of ice from time to time, but I just tip it out and replace with fresh. Sometimes it starts to freeze over quickly, but I just add a little boiled water to it - not so that they burn themselves, mind! Otherwise I break the ice layer off the top - careful, it can cut like glass sometimes.

Regards, Kerry
