Hi everybody
It has been confirmed that there is a large colony doing very nicely along the banks of the M3 near Basingstoke. I do not know where exactly because that stretch is about 8 miles long, and the actual site is on a hush-hush-need-to-know basis. But it is good to know that they are doing well. I'm not sure I would like to live so close to the roaring traffic, but the mixed vegetation and the differing heights of shrubs and trees make the perfect habitat, despite the pollution!
I was amazed to find out that only those with a special certificate are allowed to handle the dormice - they are protected by law. Still, that is a good thing too. I would love for them to venture this way someday - it is more peaceful (unless you get buzzed by a Chinook) and we have great woods (dating before medieval records began) and an abundance of blackberry bushes (evil things and why are the best berries at the top?), not to mention other wild fruits - rose hips, nuts etc.
Regards, Kerry
